WALKING IN THE OLD TOWN OF KAVALA

The old distict of Kavala is situated around the Panagia church and the Castle. It is a labyrinth of narrow, picturesque alleys, old houses build during the Ottoman occupation and cute, little tavernas. The Old Town is expanding under and around the Byzantine castle of Kavala and it is worth spending some time exploring the area, visiting the castle and the 16th century aqueduct.

Ikossifinissa Monastery
The beautiful Monastery of the Virgin Ikossifinissa is nested in the Paggaion Mountain in the middle of immaculate forests and seats in silence, interrupted only by the whisper and the chirping of the birds and the hymns of the nuns. It was primarly buit in the 5th C A.D. and it is of a great historical value. The Monastery is commemorated in the name of the Virgin Mary, whose hundreds of years old icon, is kept there, and attracts pilgrims from all over Greece. Ôhe heavily carved wooden temple is highly admired, it was made by craftsmen from the island of Chios and took 22 years to complete. (1781-1803). The Monastery celebrates three times a year, on the 15th of August, the 14th of September and the 21st of November. It is open for visits daily. Ét closes only between 14.00-17.00 and 20.00 till sunrise.
